A Year of Purposeful Work

Over the past year, we had a whole 12 months to shake things up in our lives and with our work colleagues. Whether we stumbled a bit or scored some wins, each of us has a unique story from the past year.

Now, looking ahead to the upcoming year, how about making it even better? Here are a few suggestions to cultivate a more meaningful work experience.

Build Healthy Relationships

Not just with family, friends, and your life partner, but also at work, with your colleagues or collaborators. I don’t know about you, but I don’t feel well when there is even a small misunderstanding at work. Positive and supportive relationships are crucial for your mental health, both within and outside the workplace.

Work Satisfaction and Purpose

Finding satisfaction and a sense of purpose in your work has a huge impact on your overall happiness. In Romania we have a word I hate - „scârbiciu” - invented by someone who was unhappy with his/her own choices in life and assumed that work is only that, something you hate. Do a change while you can to find satisfaction in those 8 hours / day, five days per week, that represent such a big part of your adult life.

Physical and Mental Health

Take care of your health, see a doctor, take a break once in a while, and have an active lifestyle. It’s not only about going to the gym, it’s about maintaining your mental health as well: have in-person meetings with the people you work with or just grab a coffee together from time to time. Allow time for relaxation and informal connection, life doesn't have to be a non-stop marathon, that is only a recipe for burnout.

Environmental Sustainability

Let's not forget the impact our work has on the environment: try to reduce your carbon footprint, promote eco-friendly initiatives, and encourage sustainable practices in day-to-day operations.

If you are a decision maker in your organization, vote for a flexible work model to reduce commuting-related carbon emissions, implement energy-efficient practices in office spaces, and explore partnerships with environmentally conscious companies.

Cultivate Collaboration and Team Connectivity

Prioritize collaboration and team connectivity: maybe you have a team and they look up to you for support and confidence. Make time for them, go out for lunch once in a while, laugh, talk, change the scenery, and repeat this experience until it becomes a habit. Don't allow rust to come between you.

According to the Harvard Business Review (HBR), for effective employee collaboration, 25% of working days in a month need to be allocated for face-to-face meetings, and you can do this from the many flexible spaces around you that allow you to work closer to home.
