Hybrid work combines the best of two working modalities, and is the result of flexibilizing and mixing on-site and remote work.
In this modality, the company agrees with the team the work model conditions. In this agreement, the company settles the days to work remotely or on-site.
As each company is a particular universe, the agreement looks different. Some companies may give their teams the freedom to choose which days to work remotely and on-site, while others would choose to select the specific days of the week on which to work under a certain modality.
It is an intelligent model since it provides the benefits of both modalities. But, its implementation also represents some challenges that we will break down below.
3 Incredible Benefits of Hybrid Work
1. Enhance your team’s work experience
The hybrid work gives a sweet balance to the team, on one hand, they will enjoy working face to face with their colleagues, and on the other, the comfort of fulfilling their tasks from home or a coffee, park… the place they decide is better for them.
According to Cisco’s global report, this balance positively impacts the team’s well-being. For example, 55% of respondents said that their stress levels decreased after a year of working under this modality.
Working a few days from the office allows them to strengthen their bond and enjoy human contact which is so essential for everyone’s personal development.
Let’s give you a clear example, Apollo Technical analyzed a survey where 74% of Gen Z workers said they prefer to interact with their colleagues in person most of the time rather than just virtually.
2. Save money and time
With the mindset shift around working life, workers are focused on investing their money and time in their personal development.
Thus, the Cisco report reveals that 44% of the participants had the opportunity to invest time in the growth of their social life, with friends and family. So time and money spent on transport to work is something many would love to leave in the past.
By working under a hybrid working model and its flexibility, workers might have more time to spend as they prefer.
The financial opportunities for the companies are promising too. By working fewer days on-site it’s possible to fix maintenance costs. Also, the same survey states that 53% of companies intend to reduce their investments in conventional workplaces.
3. Greater commitment to the company
Employees feel more committed to organizations when they like working from the office, according to a recent Steelcase study.
This means that when companies offer optimal workspaces they positively impact the sense of belonging of teams by 58%. And if the office is inspiring, it influences the level of commitment of workers by 21%.
These data reflect the importance that on-site workplaces still have for workers and also put under the microscope the urgency for transforming those spaces to be welcoming, and inspiring and encourage creativity and productivity.
The study reveals that the more sense of belonging you foster in your team, the more likely you are to retain talent and improve organizational culture.
3 possible challenges you can face under this work modality
1. Extra investments in technology and training for team leaders.
It is not the same to lead and manage teams on-site as to do it virtually.
Hybrid work requires leaders to go the extra mile to effectively manage teams, especially during remote days.
That is why companies are advised to invest in technological optimizations to successfully accomplish remote work, plus providing the best and updated tools for managers and teams
2. Exhaustion during virtual workdays.
Setting clear boundaries at work is essential, otherwise, you take the risk of distorting the team’s work schedules, causing them to overwork and end up burnt out. Burnt out is a state of physical and mental exhaustion that is due to excessive stress caused by the workload, which makes it impossible for you to work or function properly.
According to Cisco, 98% of respondents said they feel frustrated during video calls from home. Due to distractions or because of how unnecessary they seem at the moment.
Have you immersed yourself so much in work and suddenly a video call meeting invitation makes you interrupt the workflow to attend, and when the meeting is finished you think “This could be an email”. This happens a lot during remote work and can be frustrating to deal with it.
3. Lack of effective workplace spaces
When companies cut back on investments in the office, they hurt the quality of their teams’ work experience.
Even though it’s not necessary to maintain the facilities as if the workers work on-site only, investments for the improvement of the spaces must be continuous. That is, invest in hybrid, private spaces, and those intended for informal recreation.
Some managers are still debating whether to choose between remote or on-site work entirely. While companies around the world decided to take a third path: hybrid work. Which would you choose?
